Fullerene C60 (Pure) - Molecule for Medical and Solar Cells

Fullerene C60 (pure) is a pure carbon allotrope molecule consisting of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow spherical structure, often referred to as a buckyball.

This molecule has 20 interlocking hexagons and 12 pentagons. It has a purity level of 99.5% to 99.9% due to solvent residues or amorphous carbon that can alter its physical and chemical properties.

Fullerene C60 (pure) Specifications

This material is in the form of black powder to crystal with a purity level of up to 99.5% area (based on HPLC testing). When dissolved in toluene, it has a maximum absorption wavelength at 335 nm. In terms of electronic characteristics, Fullerene C60 (pure) has a HOMO energy level of -6.4 eV and a LUMO energy of -4.0 eV.

Fullerene C60 (pure) has a molecular formula of C60 with a molar mass of 720.66 grams/mol. It is sensitive to air and light, so it must be stored under inert gas protection at room temperature below 15°C.

Handling Fullerene C60 (pure)

Based on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), pure Fullerene C60 follows RTECS# LS9252500 regulations and has the potential to be a flammable solid and cause skin irritation and respiratory problems. Therefore, it is recommended to use complete PPE such as gloves, goggles, and masks when conducting research.

Regarding the handling of Fullerene C60 (pure), conduct research in a fume hood or an area with exhausted ventilation that can prevent dust accumulation in the room. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.

Store in a tightly closed container, in a cool, dry place with good ventilation. Separate from incompatible materials such as nitric acid or halogens as they can trigger dangerous reactions.

Applications of Fullerene C60 (pure) in Research

1. Treatment of diabetic wounds

A study titled Ultrasound-switchable piezoelectric BiVO4/fullerene heterostructure for on-demand ROS modulation in MRSA-infected diabetic wound healing explains the relationship between the use of fullerene C60 and the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Researchers used piezoelectric BiVO4/fullerene heterostructure nanomaterials through a one-pot solvothermal method. This material has the advantage of being ultrasound-switchable, activated by ultrasonic sound waves.

Test results showed that bacteria from diabetic wounds stopped proliferating, inflammation drastically decreased, and angiogenesis was stimulated. In short, the wounds healed within 14 days.

2. Organic solar cell testing

A study titled Organic Solar Photovoltaic Cells explains the improved performance of organic solar cells using Fullerene C60 (pure). Fullerene C60 has a molecular structure that can capture and conduct electrons well. This property is used to improve the performance of organic solar cells.

Testing was conducted using optical fringe projection technique and SEM imaging to observe the physical structure of solar cells at the microscopic level. Test results showed that organic solar cells treated with Fullerene C60 were able to produce an electric current of 8 mA.
