Its two ethylene glycol units provide flexibility and hydrophilicity, while the symmetric bromoethyl termini undergo substitution with alkoxides, phenoxides, thiolates, and amines. Typical uses include joining two molecular fragments, constructing crown ethers and other macrocycles, and installing short PEG spacers to improve aqueous solubility. Supplied in a 250 mg pack, it should be handled in a fume hood with gloves and eye protection, as aliphatic dibromides are irritating alkylating agents.
