Description

SD Super Fine™ (TCI D5792) is metallic sodium supplied as a 25 wt% dispersion in mineral oil. Sodium metal is an extremely powerful reducing agent and a very strong base, but in bulk solid form it is difficult to handle and offers only a small reactive surface area. By dispersing the sodium into very fine particles within mineral oil, this product provides a far greater reactive surface area together with physical protection from air and moisture. In the laboratory, this format makes measuring and dispensing easier and delivers more consistent reaction rates than conventional cut pieces of sodium.

The key characteristics that lead chemists to choose the dispersion form are more controlled and more reproducible reactivity. The fine particles react faster and more uniformly, so reduction and deprotonation reactions can proceed at lower temperatures and in shorter reaction times. The mineral oil layer acts as a protective medium that inhibits direct contact with atmospheric oxygen and humidity during storage and material transfer. Handling and Storage

Store the container tightly closed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, kept well away from water, aqueous solutions, and any source of moisture. Keep the sodium covered by its mineral oil at all times and use the original container or another closed, moisture-resistant vessel intended for water-reactive materials. Handle only in a fume hood or under an inert atmosphere, using dry glassware and dry solvents, and wear appropriate eye protection, gloves, and a laboratory coat. Because sodium reacts violently with water to release hydrogen gas and heat, avoid contact with water and keep suitable fire-fighting provisions for water-reactive metals nearby. Residues and quench operations should be managed according to your institution's procedures for reactive metal waste, and containers should be resealed promptly after every transfer.
