Ossila antimony oxide (Sb2O3, CAS 1309-64-4) is a white inorganic semiconductor powder, also known as antimony(III) oxide or diantimony trioxide. It combines high photon conductivity with excellent chemical stability, and occurs in nature as the minerals valentinite and senarmontite. The manufacturer offers grades with an average particle size of < 210 nm or 20 – 30 nm.
In energy storage research, antimony(III) materials are studied as anodes for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries because of their high energy density and long cycle life. Reported results include a Sb2O3 composite reaching 640.8 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 after 50 cycles in lithium-ion cells, and a Sb2O3 anode retaining a reversible capacity of 414 mA h g –1 at 0.5 A g –1 after 200 cycles in sodium-ion cells.
Beyond batteries, the oxide acts as a synergist with halogenated flame retardants, as a catalyst in PET and rubber manufacture, and as an opacifier for glass, ceramics and enamels.
- Anode material research for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.
- Synergist with halogenated flame retardants in plastics, coatings, paints, adhesives, rubber, fibres and textiles.
- Catalyst in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and rubber.
- Opacifying agent for glasses, ceramics and enamels.
- Optoelectronics and semiconducting metal oxide research.
