2,2'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine, known as TFMB (CAS 341-58-2), is a fluorinated diamine monomer used to build polyimides, polyimines, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). It is a benzidine derivative carrying trifluoromethyl groups at the 2 and 2' positions. The product is supplied as a white to pale yellow powder or crystal with a purity of >98%.
The rigid aromatic core of TFMB makes it a useful linker for high surface area frameworks. In polyimides, TFMB repeat units give strong thermal resistance and a low linear thermal expansion coefficient (23.4 × 10−6 /K from 50 to 250 °C).
The strongly electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl groups limit π-electron delocalisation along the conjugated backbone, so TFMB-based polyimide films are markedly more transparent than methyl-substituted analogues. This transparency suits solar cell encapsulation, where MOF cluster light diffusers gave a 6.6% gain in power conversion efficiency, and flexible solar cells on robust TFMB polyimide substrates kept 97% of initial efficiency after 5000 bending cycles.
- Synthesis of transparent, thermally stable polyimides and polyimines.
- Linker for high surface area MOFs and COFs.
- Polyimide encapsulation layers for solar cells combined with MOF light diffusers.
- Mechanically robust polyimide substrates for flexible organic solar cells.
- Fluorinated building block for high-performance polymers and photonics materials such as gradient-index optics.
