Test-Tube Holder: Uses and How to Use It
Test-Tube Holder: Uses and How to Use It
A test-tube holder is a tool with a wooden handle and a wire clamp at the end, used to hold a test tube while it is heated so your hand stays away from the heat.

What is a test-tube holder used for?
- Holding a test tube while heating it over a burner.
- Moving hot test tubes to the rack.
- Keeping your hand away from contents that might spurt.
Parts of a test-tube holder
- 1Sprung wire clamp – wraps around and grips the tube
- 2Wooden handle – does not conduct heat

How to use a test-tube holder

Clamp near the mouth of the tube
Clamp about one-third of the tube's length from the mouth (1). Clamping near the bottom puts your hand too close to the flame.

Hold the handle, not the spring
Grip the wooden handle. Do not press the wire part while heating, or the tube may slip out.

Heat at an angle while shaking gently
Tilt the tube about 45° over the flame (1), shake it gently for even heating and point the mouth away from yourself and others.
Common mistakes
- Holding a hot tube by hand or with tissue.
- Letting the wooden handle get so close to the flame that it chars.
Care and safety
- Replace holders with weak springs or cracked handles.
- Keep dry so the wire does not rust.
SOP for using a test-tube holder
A summary of the standard operating procedure (SOP) for a test-tube holder that your laboratory can adapt. Each step is explained in the how-to section above.
1Protective equipment
- A buttoned, long-sleeved lab coat.
- Safety glasses; goggles where corrosive splashes are possible.
- Nitrile gloves suited to the chemicals handled; heat-resistant gloves for hot items.
2Before use
- The spring is strong and the wooden handle is not cracked or charred.
- The tube to be heated is borosilicate and not cracked.
3Procedure
4After use
- Place the hot tube in the rack and store the holder somewhere dry.
5Verification & calibration
- No calibration needed; check the spring before use.
6Emergencies
- Breakage: never pick up shards by hand. Use a brush and dustpan or tongs and put them in the broken-glass bin.
- Chemical spill: warn people nearby, secure the area and clean up with a spill kit according to the SDS.
- Chemical on skin or in eyes: rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes (eyewash or safety shower), then report to the lab supervisor.
- Burn from hot glass: cool under running water for 10–20 minutes; do not apply toothpaste or butter.

Frequently asked questions
Where should the holder grip the test tube?
About one-third of the tube's length from the mouth.
Why is the handle made of wood?
