Naphthalyne Precursors — includes naphthalene precursors such as trimethylsilyl naphthyl triflate derivatives as well as halogen- and amino-substituted naphthalene compounds, which serve as starting materials for generating reactive aryne species through elimination. This group also includes simple substituted naphthalenes as structural references.

Trimethylsilyl naphthyl triflate compounds are used by synthetic organic chemists as precursors to generate naphthalyne in situ via fluoride-based elimination reactions, which then react in cycloaddition or insertion reactions to build polycyclic aromatic frameworks. Bromo, iodo, and fluoronaphthalene derivatives are also used as starting materials for synthesis or as model compounds in aromatic reactivity studies.
