The Iwaki PA 2420 Allihn Glass Condenser is a condenser built as a series of bulbs enclosed in a cooling jacket. It is designed mainly for reflux, where a reaction mixture is boiled for a long time and the condensed solvent vapour returns to the flask. Cooling water flows through the outer jacket while vapour rises through the bulbed inner tube and condenses on its surface. In a synthesis setup, the Allihn condenser is one of the basic pieces of equipment and is used for almost every reaction that needs prolonged heating.

Laboratories choose the Allihn condenser because its bulbs give the vapour more contact with the cold wall than a straight condenser of the same length. As a result, condensation is more efficient and less solvent is lost during reflux. The bulb shape also helps the condensate drip smoothly back into the flask, so the reaction keeps running steadily. Iwaki is a well-known brand of laboratory glassware, recognised for good-quality glass that holds up to heating and to common laboratory chemicals. These qualities make the Iwaki PA 2420 a dependable choice for routine and repeated reflux work.

In Indonesian laboratories, the Allihn condenser is a standard part of organic chemistry teaching labs at universities, research labs, and quality control labs in industry. It is commonly set up on a round-bottom flask over a heating mantle or water bath and connected to a tap water line or a recirculating chiller. The available lengths of 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm, and 500 mm let users match the cooling capacity to the volume of their reaction setup.

  • Reflux of organic reactions: the bulbed inner tube condenses rising solvent vapour efficiently and returns it to the flask, keeping the reaction volume stable during long heating.
  • Esterification and other synthesis practicals: in teaching laboratories, the Allihn condenser is the standard choice for reactions that must be heated under reflux for an extended period.
  • Sample digestion and extraction under heat: when a sample is boiled with a solvent for a long time, the condenser reduces solvent loss and keeps the concentration consistent.
  • Recrystallisation preparation: dissolving a solid in boiling solvent under reflux keeps the solvent from evaporating, so the user can control the solution volume more precisely.
  • Scaling cooling capacity to batch size: the choice of 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm, and 500 mm lengths lets laboratories pick a condenser that suits small or larger reaction volumes.

Store the condenser clean and completely dry in a closed cabinet or on a padded rack, away from heavy items that could knock or crush it. Keep it in its original packaging or in a dedicated glassware drawer with dividers so it does not roll or touch other glass. Before each use, check for cracks, chips, and damaged joints. Connect the water hoses securely, with water entering at the lower inlet and leaving at the upper outlet, and start the water flow before heating. Clamp the condenser firmly to a stand rather than letting the flask joint carry its weight. Let the glass cool before rinsing, to avoid thermal shock. Wear safety glasses and handle it with care during assembly and cleaning.
