These highly conductive films consist of interconnected carbon nanotube networks. Each nanotube is a cylindrical molecule with walls built from single-atom-thick carbon layers. The films are 10-20 µm thick with a diameter of 120-130 mm, and they combine high electrical conductivity with flexibility.
Because electrons travel through the nanotube structure with little scattering, the films conduct electricity better than conventional films, with conductivity of 1x10 5 -4x10 5 S/m. They also transfer heat well, which suits thermal management in electronic devices. Although lightweight, they offer high tensile strength (60-120 MPa) and good durability, and metal content is below 0.5%.
In thin layers the films can be highly transparent, useful where a conductive coating must let light through, as in touch screens and flexible displays. The chemical inertness of carbon nanotubes also gives resistance to corrosion and degradation in harsh environments.
- Conductive and transparent layers in electronics such as touch screens and flexible displays.
- Conductive components for energy storage devices.
- Conductive layers in solar cell research and development.
- Heat spreading for thermal management in electronic devices.
