This expandable graphite from Nanografi has a purity of 95-97% and a particle size of 50 mesh. Sometimes called exfoliated graphite, it is made from natural mineral graphite and is used in flame retardants, graphite foil, metallurgy and coatings chemistry.
Graphite is built from stacked layers, and other molecules can be inserted between them. Treating the graphite with acids, most commonly sulfuric acid, intercalates these layers and turns ordinary graphite into an expandable form.
When the material is heated, each flake swells to many times its original volume. The expanded flakes take on a characteristic worm-like shape and typically reach several millimeters in length.
- Used as a flame retardant additive.
- Serves as a raw material for producing graphite foil.
- Covers melts and moulds in metallurgy, acting as oxidation protection and insulation.
- Used in chemical processes for paints and varnishes.
