Magnesium fluoride (MgF2) is an inorganic metal fluoride, widely used as a source material for thin-film deposition. Sputtering targets are solid, dense plates or discs that are bombarded in a vacuum chamber to release atoms that condense onto a substrate, forming a uniform functional layer. MgF2 belongs to the fluoride ceramic family, valued for its optical transparency across a broad spectral range and its low refractive index.
