Magnesium (Mg) sputtering targets are solid plates of magnesium metal, an alkaline earth metal valued for its light weight and reactivity. In physical vapor deposition (PVD), the target is bombarded with energetic ions so that magnesium atoms are ejected and deposited as thin films on a substrate. Magnesium targets belong to the metal sputtering target group and are often used to create magnesium-containing layers, including oxide films, for research purposes.
