This is a nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (Nitinol) sheet with a thickness of 0,5 mm and an austenite finish (AF) temperature of 80-85°C. It is offered in square pieces from 1 x 1 cm up to 20 x 20 cm.
Nitinol's behaviour comes from a temperature-driven phase transformation in its crystal structure. On cooling from the high-temperature austenite phase to the low-temperature martensite phase, the alloy changes shape, and it recovers its original form when the temperature rises again. This property makes it a useful material for building heat-responsive and electrically driven actuators.
The alloy is also known for its high biocompatibility, which has made it widely used in medical devices such as stents, implants and orthodontic wires. In structural engineering, superelastic Nitinol is studied for crack-sensing reinforcement in concrete.
- Thermal and electrical actuators, such as sensors and actuators in thermal valves for fluidics.
- Autofocus actuator mechanisms of the type used in action cameras.
- Biomedical materials research, including orthopedic implants, catheters and orthodontic brackets and wires.
- Development of self-expanding stents and neurovascular intervention devices.
- Structural engineering studies where Nitinol wires in concrete help reveal cracks.
