This Nanografi sheet is a nickel-titanium shape memory alloy, commonly known as Nitinol, supplied at a thickness of 2 mm with an austenite finish (AF) temperature of -10 - -15°C. It is offered in square pieces from 1 x 1 cm up to 20 x 20 cm.
Nitinol's behaviour comes from a temperature-driven phase transformation in its crystal structure. On cooling from the high-temperature austenite phase to the low-temperature martensite phase, the alloy changes shape, and this effect underlies its use in sensing and actuation.
The alloy is known for high biocompatibility, which has made it a widely used material in biomedicine, from implants and orthodontic components to stents. Its superelastic form is also used in structural engineering, where embedded wires can help reveal cracks in concrete.
- Thermal and electrical actuators, such as sensors and actuators in thermal valves for fluidics.
- Autofocus actuators in action cameras.
- Biomedical materials including orthopedic implants, catheters and orthodontic brackets and wires.
- Stents and neurovascular interventions such as stroke thrombolysis devices.
- Superelastic reinforcement in bridge and building construction, where Nitinol wires in concrete can indicate cracks.
