1,1,2,2-Tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethene (TEPE, CAS 4863-90-5) is a symmetrical, butterfly-shaped bridging linker used to construct covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and conjugated polymers. Its structure consists of four 4-ethynylphenyl arms connected through a central ethene double bond, and it is supplied by Ossila at a purity above 98% as a beige to light brown powder or crystals.
As a tetraphenylethene derivative, TEPE carries aggregation induced emission (AIE) behaviour: it is non-emissive at low concentrations but becomes emissive on aggregation. This property makes TPE-based materials useful as chemosensors, stimuli-responsive nanomaterials and active layers in OLEDs.
TEPE readily undergoes homopolycyclotrimerization to give hyperbranched polyTPE with high molecular weight, good thermal stability and good solubility. This homopolymer acts as a fluorescent sensor for explosives, with a quenching constant reaching 758,000 M−1. TEPE-derived frameworks have also been reported for visible-light photocatalytic H2O2 production (3009 μmol g-1 h−1), CO2 capture of 5.35 mmol g−1 at 273 K, Fe3+ sensing, antibacterial activity and supercapacitor electrodes.
- Linker for synthesising cross-linked covalent organic frameworks and conjugated porous polymers.
- Monomer for hyperbranched polyTPE used as a fluorescent chemosensor for explosives.
- Building block for conjugated organic polymers that photocatalytically produce H2O2 from H2O and O2 under visible light.
- Precursor for fluorine-rich porous polymers studied for carbon dioxide adsorption.
- Component of luminescent conjugated macrocycle polymers for sensing Fe3+ ions and organic dyes.
- Linker for imine-bridged COFs evaluated in antibacterial and supercapacitor studies.
