1,1':3',1''-Terphenyl-4,4''-dicarbaldehyde (CAS 171820-02-3) is a meta-terphenyl building block carrying an aldehyde group at each end. Its V-shaped geometry and two reactive aldehyde sites make it a useful linker for constructing cross-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) by condensation with amine or ketone derivatives. It is supplied by Ossila as a pale yellow powder with a purity above 97%.
The molecule can be modified further before framework assembly. Pd-catalysed direct arylation with 9-bromoanthracene gives an anthracene-terphenyldicarbaldehyde, which has been used to build a one-dimensional COF for detecting chromium (III).
In optoelectronics, a one-pot reaction converts this dialdehyde into a violet-blue phenanthroimidazole emitter. The meta linkage of the terphenyl core limits π-conjugation, which leads to efficient violet-blue emission; an OLED based on this emitter reached a current efficiency of 1.99 cd/A and a power efficiency of 1.81 lm/W.
- Synthesis of cross-linked covalent organic frameworks through reaction with amine or ketone derivatives.
- Preparation of one-dimensional COFs for fluorescent detection of chromium (III).
- Research on one-dimensional COF films for near-infrared electrochromism.
- One-pot synthesis of violet-blue emitters for organic light-emitting diodes.
- Use as an aldehyde ligand for cross-linked MOF and COF networks.
