1,2-Bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene (CAS 1240785-42-5) is a tetraphenylethylene building block carrying two ethynyl groups. It is supplied as a pale yellow powder with purity above 98% and serves as a ligand and monomer for macromolecules and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that show photoluminescence and aggregation-induced emission (AIE).
Its tetraphenylethylene core has a propeller-like geometry that prevents π–π stacking, so the quenching normally caused by aggregation does not occur. The two terminal alkynes are highly reactive, allowing the molecule to take part in Sonogashira coupling and azide-alkyne cycloaddition (click chemistry) to build cross-linked COF and MOF networks.
Iodinating the ethynyl groups and then carrying out a KI-mediated, metal-free homo-polycoupling yields polydiynes whose refractive index can be tuned with UV light from n = 1.77 to 2.11.
