1,3,5-Tris(4′-carboxy[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)benzene, known as H3TCBPB (CAS 911818-75-2), is a nanosized trigonal carboxylate linker used to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Supplied as a white powder/crystal with purity above 98%, it features biphenyl arms connecting a central benzene ring to three carboxylic acid groups. Neighbouring carboxylate groups sit roughly 2 nm apart, and each lies about 1.2 nm from the central ring.
Unlike many carboxylic acid assemblies, H3TCBPB dimers are held together by 2-fold C−H···O hydrogen bonds rather than the expected O−H···O bonds. The resulting displaced dimers form a deformed hexagonal porous network with higher packing density, and the reduced symmetry leads to chiral polymorphs in surface monolayers.
When combined with aluminium ion cluster nodes, the ligand forms Al-TCBPB, a monoclinic MOF (space group c2/m) with a BET surface area of 2,311 m2/g and a total pore volume of 0.80 cm3/g. At 9 MPa it shows excess hydrogen adsorption of 4.8 wt.% at 77 K and 1.4 wt.% at 298 K.
