1,3,5-Tris(4-cyanophenyl)benzene (TCPB, CAS 382137-78-2) is a triangular nitrile-functionalised building block used to construct covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its structure consists of a central benzene ring carrying three 4-cyanophenyl arms at the 1, 3 and 5 positions, making it a three-connected node for cross-linked framework networks.
The compound serves as a precursor for nitrogen-rich, triazine-based COFs studied as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). It undergoes polycondensation and cross-coupling reactions readily, allowing COF networks to be formed. Reported work also covers COF catalysts for photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization.
Reacting TCPB with hydrazine hydrate under sulfur powder catalysis yields TPBTz, an s-tetrazine-based porous organic polymer that captures iodine and acts as a real-time fluorescent sensor for iodine and picric acid. For iodine, TPBTz shows a KSV of 1.70 × 105 L mol −1 and a detection limit of 1.76 × 10 –11 mol L −1. Ossila supplies TCPB at >98% purity as a white to off-white powder or crystals.
