1,3,5-Tris(4-formyl-3-hydroxyphenyl)benzene, also known as TFHB (CAS 2244985-34-8), is a trifunctional aldehyde and hydroxy linker used to construct cross-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its structure consists of a central benzene ring carrying three salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxybenzaldehyde) arms, supplied as an off-white powder with >98% purity.
Condensation of the salicylaldehyde groups with amines or hydrazine derivatives gives hydroxy-imine units within the framework. These units can bind metal centres to form metal-COF complexes, and under light they undergo excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), giving strong luminescence. Anions such as fluoride interact with the hydroxyl groups, interrupting ESIPT and quenching the emission, which makes TFHB-derived COFs useful as anion sensors.
Thanks to their many hydroxy groups and a surface area of 597 m2/g, TFHB-based COFs have also been proposed as an in-house solid-phase extraction material for analysing α2- and β2-ARA residues in milk. The dual aldehyde and hydroxy functionality also allows post-functionalization of the resulting networks.
- Synthesis of covalent organic frameworks for porous materials research.
- Fabrication of luminescent ESIPT-based COFs for fluorescent anion sensing, such as fluoride detection.
- Preparation of metal-COF complexes through coordination of hydroxy-imine sites.
- Development of COF sorbents for solid-phase extraction of α2- and β2-ARA residues in milk.
- Construction of hydrazone-linked COF fluorescent probes, as reported for hypochlorite detection.
