1,3,6,8-Tetrakis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)pyrene (TPPY, CAS 1398053-00-3) is a pyrene core carrying four boronic acid pinacol ester groups at the 1, 3, 6 and 8 positions. It serves as a tetratopic bridging ligand that undergoes polycondensation and cross-coupling reactions to build cross-linked covalent organic framework (COF) networks. Ossila supplies it at >97% purity as a beige to yellow powder or crystals.
When mechanically ground the compound is fluorescent but not phosphorescent. Scratching it, however, produces dimers with strong intermolecular electronic coupling, which links singlet and triplet states and gives room temperature phosphorescence in air.
Its high boron content makes it useful for neutron detection: as a fluorescent dopant in a poly(vinyltoluene) matrix it delivers scintillation light output and neutron capture comparable to state-of-the-art commercial scintillators. Pyrene donor units are also used in conjugated microporous polymers; PyDF, which pairs pyrene with fluorinated dibenzothiophene-dioxide (DBTDO) acceptors, reached a photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of 18.93 mmol h −1 g −1 through efficient charge separation.
- Building block for cross-linked covalent organic frameworks via polycondensation and cross-coupling.
- Boron-rich fluorescent dopant in poly(vinyltoluene) scintillators for thermal neutron detection.
- Donor unit in conjugated microporous polymers for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
- Studies of mechano-responsive room temperature phosphorescence in air.
