1,4-Di(4-pyridyl)benzene (DPyBz, CAS 113682-56-7) is a rigid, linear linker molecule used in the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination assemblies. Its structure is simple: a central benzene ring carries a 4-pyridine group at each of its 1 and 4 positions, giving two nitrogen donor sites pointing in opposite directions. Ossila supplies it with a purity of >98% as a white powder or crystal.
In the zinc framework Zn2(TCPP)(DPyBz), two-dimensional layers built from Zn2(COO)4 paddlewheel units and TCPP4− ligands are held apart by DPyBz pillars, producing a two-fold catenated 3D structure. This material keeps its porosity permanently, reaches a BET area of 1,324 m2 g−1 and captures CO2 and light hydrocarbons selectively, which points to uses in environmental protection.
DPyBz has also been incorporated into iridium metallacycles that exploit B–H···H–C dihydrogen bonding to separate hexane isomers, yielding n-hexane of >99% purity from an equimolar mixture of all five isomers in a single adsorption–desorption cycle.
- Pillaring ligand for porous metal-organic frameworks such as Zn2(TCPP)(DPyBz).
- Building block for MOFs studied for selective CO2 and light hydrocarbon capture.
- Component of self-assembled metallacycles for separating hexane isomers.
- Linker for coordination polymers, including nickel and copper based frameworks.
