1,4-Dibromonaphthalene (1,4-DBN, CAS 83-53-4) from Ossila is a naphthalene ring carrying bromine atoms at the 1 and 4 positions. This substitution pattern makes it a convenient starting point for further reactions, and it is widely used as an intermediate when building functional materials for OLEDs, organic photovoltaics, OFETs and low band gap polymers.
Beyond materials science, the compound serves as a precursor to derivatives explored in drug discovery, including enzyme-inhibitory, antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antiallergic candidates, as well as phenols, amines and ligands for coordination chemistry. It is also known as a triplet excitation acceptor with useful phosphorescent behaviour.
One example of its use is the ambipolar deep-blue emitter 2NBTPI, prepared from 1,4-dibromonaphthalene, which shows spatially separated HOMO and LUMO orbitals, high thermal stability and deep blue emission in OLED devices. The material is supplied as a white to off-white powder or crystals with purity above 98% by 1H NMR, in 50 g, 100 g and 250 g packs.
