1-Ethynylpyrene (CAS 34993-56-1), also known as pyrenylacetylene, is a pyrene molecule carrying an ethynyl group at the 1-position. Supplied by Ossila at >98% purity as a dark grey powder or crystals, it serves as a linker and end-capping ligand for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and is widely used as a fluorescent probe.
Its terminal alkyne makes it well suited to click reactions and Sonogashira coupling. In one reported example, UIO-66-NH2 was modified post-synthetically with 1-ethynylpyrene by click chemistry to give the highly fluorescent UIO-66-Py MOF. This material detected 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in solution through fluorescence quenching, reaching 85% quenching efficiency with 0.203 mM TNP and a detection limit of 4.5 x 10 −7 M.
Beyond frameworks, 1-ethynylpyrene units incorporated next to each other in duplex DNA (more than three chromophores) can form an ordered helical π-stacked arrangement along the major groove.
- End-capping and linking COF networks as an ethyne-functional pyrene ligand.
- Building fluorescent MOF and COF probes for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) detection.
- Developing fluorescent sensors, including ethynylpyrene-linked benzocrown ethers for metal ions.
- Photocatalysis research, such as photocatalytic hydrogen evolution systems.
- Post-synthetic functionalization of frameworks and nanosheets via click chemistry.
- Arranging helical π-stacked chromophore arrays on DNA scaffolds.
