10,15-Dihydro-5H-diindolo[3,2-a:3',2'-c]carbazole, better known as triazatruxene (TAT) or triindole (CAS 109005-10-9), is an organic semiconductor building block for OLED, OFET and OPV research. Its structure consists of three indole units fused at ortho-positions around a central benzene ring, giving a wheel-shaped, planar molecule. It can also be viewed as a carbazole with two additional fused indoles.
The C3 symmetric, π-extended core is a strong electron donor and is used either alone or built into larger donor structures. Its disc-like shape favours π-π stacking and columnar supramolecular ordering, which is why triazatruxene-based semiconductors show high hole mobility and are widely applied as hole transporting layers. The rigid planar framework can also improve resistance to photo- and thermal degradation and support efficient charge-carrier transport.
Reactive positions on the indole nitrogens and the benzene rings make the core easy to functionalise, for example with alkyl chains or electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, allowing the optical, electronic and morphological properties of derivatives to be tuned. Supplied at >98% purity (1H NMR) as a white to yellowish green powder or crystals, in 1 g and 5 g packs.
- Synthesis of hole transporting materials for organic and perovskite solar cells.
- Building block for emitting and donor materials in OLEDs, including thermally activated delayed fluorescence designs.
- Preparation of organic semiconductors for OFET devices.
- Electron-donating unit in donor-acceptor systems such as exciplex materials.
