2-(2,4-Difluorophenyl)-5-fluoropyridine, also known as DFFPPy (CAS 1426047-01-9), is a trifluorinated phenyl-pyridine derivative supplied at >98% purity. It is mainly used as a chelating, cyclometalating ligand and as a fluorinated heterocyclic building block for APIs, OLEDs, DSSCs and photocatalytic chemistry.
Phenyl-pyridine ligands of this type are widely chosen for preparing iridium complexes used in photoredox catalysis, where they help generate the excited triplet Ir(III)* state under visible light. Because its three fluorine atoms make it electron deficient, DFFPPy shifts photoemitter emission towards the blue, typically by lowering the HOMO energy level, and has been reported to raise photoluminescence quantum yield from 6.5% to 50.8%.
In medicinal chemistry, the compound has shown effectiveness against visceral leishmaniasis in preclinical screening, with the added lipophilicity from the fluorine substituents linked to higher potency against Leishmania infantum. It appears as a white to yellow powder or crystal with a melting point of 75 °C – 78 °C.
- Synthesis of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes for visible-light photoredox catalysis.
- Preparation of blue-shifted phosphorescent emitters for OLEDs.
- Ligand development for dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs).
- Building block in drug discovery, including preclinical work on visceral leishmaniasis.
