2-(2,4-Difluorophenyl)-5-methylpyridine, also known as DFPMPy (CAS 583052-21-5), is a fluorinated arylpyridine building block supplied at >97% purity. Its methyl group improves solubility, while the pyridine nitrogen lone pair and the π-system of the phenyl ring allow it to bind a metal centre as a cyclometalating ligand.
Metal complexes built from this ligand perform well as visible-light photoredox catalysts. On irradiation, the excited complex undergoes metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), passes a single electron to a substrate, and then recovers an electron from another reagent to close the catalytic cycle.
The same complexes are prepared for light-emitting electrochemical cells, with photoluminescent quantum yields reported up to 93%. The two fluorine substituents lower the HOMO energy level and shift the emission spectrum. Arylpyridine-iridium complexes are also studied for hydrogen generation by water splitting and as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
