2,2'-(5'-(4-(Cyanomethyl)phenyl)-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-diyl)diacetonitrile (CAS 2311888-44-3), commonly called 1,3,5-tris(4-cyanomethylphenyl)benzene or TCPB, is a covalent organic framework (COF) building block. Its triphenylbenzene core carries three cyanomethyl groups, making it a tritopic nitrile ligand for cross-linked COF networks. It is supplied as a yellow powder at >98% purity.
Under basic conditions, TCPB reacts with di- or trialdehyde ligands through Knoevenagel condensation, giving fully conjugated phenylene vinylene COFs that carry nitrile anchoring groups. These frameworks show a photoluminescent quantum yield of 27%, rising to as much as 33% when fluorinated aldehyde ligands are used. The nitrile groups can also be converted into carboxylic acids, which bind metal centres to form COF-metal complexes.
Frameworks prepared from this ligand are highly crystalline and stable, and have been used for visible-light photocatalytic oxidation, turning boronic acids into alcohols.
- Synthesis of vinylene-linked COFs by Knoevenagel condensation with di- or trialdehyde ligands.
- Preparation of COF photocatalysts for visible-light oxidation of boronic acids to alcohols.
- Development of conjugated COF materials for optoelectronics.
- Construction of fluorescent COFs with high photoluminescent quantum yield.
- Preparation of COF-metal complexes after converting nitrile groups to carboxylic acids.
