2,2′,7,7′-Tetrabromo-9,9′-spirobifluorene (TBSBF, CAS 128055-74-3) is a spirobifluorene intermediate used to build semiconducting small molecules and polymers for OLEDs, organic photovoltaics and perovskite solar cells, including the hole-transport material Spiro-OMeTAD (Spiro-MeOTAD). Ossila supplies it at >99% purity (HPLC) as a white to off-white powder or crystals.

The molecule consists of a 9,9′-spirobifluorene core whose benzene rings carry bromine at the 2, 2′, 7 and 7′ positions. Spirobifluorene compounds are valued for strong thermal and chemical stability and their tendency to form amorphous solid films, while the bromide end groups give convenient handles for coupling reactions that extend the core into larger structures.

Yamamoto polymerisation of TBSBF with Ni(COD)2 as catalyst yields a stable poly(SBF) whose BET surface area reaches ca. 2,000 m2 g-1 after thermal treatment. It has also served as a starting material for TPSBF, the emitter in a white OLED that reached a maximum luminance of 57 680 cd m-2 and a current efficiency of 6.51 cd A-1.

  • Synthesis of Spiro-OMeTAD hole-transport material for perovskite solar cells.
  • Preparation of spirobifluorene-based host and emitter materials for efficient OLEDs.
  • Building block for organic photovoltaic and OFET semiconductor materials, including low band gap polymers.
  • Yamamoto polymerisation to porous organic polymers with high BET surface area.
  • Synthesis of spirobifluorene derivatives for molecular glass resists in extreme ultraviolet lithography.
