2,2′-Bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylic acid (5,5'-dcbpy, CAS 1802-30-8) from Ossila is a bipyridyl ligand carrying carboxylic acid anchoring groups at the 5- and 5′-positions. It is an isomer of 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid and is widely used as a heterocyclic building block for organometallic synthesis. Its two carboxylic acid groups make it well suited to assembling 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
MOFs built from this ligand have been studied for carbon dioxide reduction, organic photocatalysis, water oxidation, antioxidants and lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. Hydrogen bonding gives the compound a highly ordered stacking structure, which allows it to act as an anode material with high specific capacity, good cycling stability and strong rate performance. In lithium-ion cells it has been reported to deliver an initial capacity of 1200 mAh•g -1 at 200 mA•g -1, retaining 550 mAh•g -1 after 100 cycles.
Ruthenium complexes using this ligand have shown radical scavenging behaviour and cytotoxic activity against HeLa and HepG2 cancer cell lines, with lower toxicity towards normal NIH 3T3 cells. The material is supplied at >98% purity (1H NMR) in 5 g, 10 g and 25 g packs.
