2,2-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane, known as 4-BDAF (CAS 69563-88-8), is a fluorinated diamine monomer supplied at >99% purity. Its structure consists of two phenoxyaniline units joined through a hexafluoroisopropane bridge, and it serves mainly as an intermediate in polyimide synthesis.
The trifluoromethyl groups do two jobs: their bulk weakens intermolecular interactions, and their electron-withdrawing character limits electron delocalisation across the benzene rings. Polyimides made from 4-BDAF therefore show a low dielectric constant (1.51–2.42 at 100 kHz) and low dielectric loss (0.00698), which suits them to telecommunication devices. Their high optical transparency has also been used for solar cell substrates, with devices reaching 16.1% power conversion efficiency.
Polyetherimides based on 4-BDAF have been studied for capacitive energy storage, giving a discharge density of 3.6 J/cm3 and a charge-discharge efficiency of 96.5%. The material is a white to pale yellow to light brown powder or crystal.
