2,2'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether (6FODA, CAS 344-48-9) is a fluorinated diamine monomer used mainly to make polyimides. Its structure is an aminophenyl ether core carrying two trifluoromethyl groups at the 2,2'-positions. It is supplied at >99% purity as a white to off-white powder or crystal.
The bulky trifluoromethyl groups disrupt π-π stacking between the benzene rings, which lowers light absorption in the resulting polyimides. These highly transparent polymers suit flexible OLED display substrates, and the refractive index can be tuned through the proportion of 6FODA in the formulation, with an accuracy of ±4 × 10−4.
Membranes cast from 6FODA-based polyimides show selective gas permeation, with ideal CO2/CH4 selectivity reaching 188.43. Fibres spun from these polyimides give fabrics with low thermal conductivity (0.03 W/m⋅K), good flame retardancy and strong chemical and UV resistance, making them relevant to aviation, military and other protective uses.
- Monomer for synthesising high-transparency polyimides for flexible OLED displays.
- Preparation of polyimide gas separation membranes for CO2/CH4 separation.
- Copolyimides with tunable refractive index for photonics and gradient-index optics.
- Building block for high-performance polymers, COFs and polyamides.
- Polyimide fibres for flame-retardant, thermally insulating protective fabrics.
