2,2'-Dimethyl[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine (CAS 84-67-3), also known as m-tolidine or 2,2'-dimethylbenzidine, is a rigid biphenyl diamine building block supplied by Ossila at >99% purity as a white to off-white powder. Its biphenyl core carries two amine groups and two methyl groups, and the terminal amines make it well suited to straightforward coupling reactions.
In photovoltaics research, the diamine can be condensed with diphenylacetaldehyde under camphorsulfonic acid catalysis, through nucleophilic substitution and dehydration, to give a fully conjugated enamine. This p-type semiconductor has been used as a hole transport layer with a hole mobility of 2.5 × 10-2 cm2/Vs in solar cells reaching 18.4% efficiency.
The compound is also a monomer for polyimides with low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, aimed at telecommunication uses that need fast transport and minimal signal loss. Its branched methyl groups widen intermolecular spacing, lowering the effective number of dipole moments. It further serves as a biphenyl ligand for cross-linked COF and MOF networks.
- Synthesis of enamine-based hole transport materials for solar cells.
- Preparation of low-dielectric-constant, low-loss polyimides for telecommunication applications.
- Production of polyimides for battery components such as separators.
- Development of polyimide-based separation membranes.
- Use as a biphenyl ligand for building cross-linked COF and MOF networks.
