2,3,3',4'-Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (a-BPDA, CAS 36978-41-3) is a non-symmetrical biphenyl dianhydride building block supplied at >99% purity. Its two phthalic anhydride units are joined unsymmetrically at the 3- and 4-positions, and the anhydride end groups allow straightforward coupling reactions for polyimide, covalent organic framework (COF) and battery material synthesis.
Because the asymmetric linkage twists the polymer backbone, intermolecular charge transfer is suppressed, giving polyimides that are both transparent and heat resistant. Diimides prepared from a-BPDA and cyclohexylamine show long-lived luminescence lasting up to 1.3 seconds after UV irradiation.
In COF work, a-BPDA has been used to make materials with a low dielectric constant (2.72), a low thermal expansion coefficient (62.2 ppm/K) and high breakdown strength (412.8 kV/mm), suited to low signal loss electronic packaging. Polyimide-decorated carbon nanotube cathodes for lithium batteries reached 163 mAh/g at 0.05 A/g and 122 mAh/g at 5 A/g.
