2,3,5,6-Tetrabromothieno[3,2-b]thiophene (CAS 124638-53-5) is a fully brominated derivative of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, supplied by Ossila as a white powder or crystals with >98% purity by HPLC. Bromine atoms occupy every available position around the fused ring system, so the molecule can be coupled in several directions to build larger conjugated structures.
Chemists use it as an intermediate for supramolecules, semiconducting small molecules, oligomers and conjugated polymers, including ladder-type polythienothiophenes aimed at organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPV). The bromide end groups make it well suited to straightforward coupling reactions.
The compound is prepared by complete bromination of thienothiophene with bromine in acetic acid and chloroform, or on a larger scale by brominating thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid in water and acetic acid. Selective reduction with zinc in acetic acid gives 3,6-dibromothieno[3,2-b]thiophene, opening a route to further functionalisation at the 3,6-positions.
- Building block for conjugated polymers and low band gap polymers.
- Synthesis of ladder-type polythienothiophenes for OFET and OPV devices.
- Preparation of semiconducting molecules, oligomers and supramolecules.
- Precursor to 3,6-dibromothieno[3,2-b]thiophene via selective zinc reduction.
- Synthesis of materials for OLED and organic photovoltaic research.
