2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene, commonly called HAT6 (CAS 70351-86-9), is a discotic liquid crystal widely regarded as the model compound for DLC research. Its flat, hexagonal triphenylene core carries six n-hexyloxy chains placed symmetrically at the 2,3,6,7,10,11-positions. These chains improve solubility in organic solvents and raise the electron density of the core, and studies have shown that the motion of the core and the tails is strongly coupled.
At room temperature the material exists as a plastic crystal, with the cores tilted relative to the column axes. Differential scanning calorimetry reveals two transitions, near 65 °C and 100 °C, corresponding to the plastic crystal melting into the columnar hexagonal (ColH) phase and the ColH phase melting into the isotropic liquid.
Beyond fundamental studies, HAT6 serves as a transparent hole transport material in perovskite solar cells, where it improves ambient and thermal stability; such devices kept 93% of their initial efficiency for 690 h and 92% after 1200 h in ambient conditions. Supplied as an off-white to pale yellow powder or crystal with >98% (HPLC) purity.
