2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexamethoxytriphenylene (HMTP, CAS 808-57-1) is a flat, disc-shaped conjugated triphenylene carrying six methoxy groups at the ortho-positions, giving it D3h symmetry. Supplied by Ossila as a brown powder with purity above 98%, it serves as a building block for liquid crystals, battery materials, macromolecules and porous organic frameworks.
Its redox chemistry is highly reversible, which makes it suitable as an organic cathode material. A battery cell containing 40 wt% of the compound has been reported to deliver its full specific capacity at current densities of up to 3 C. Because the molecule is planar, it is also used in scanning tunneling microscopy studies of charge-transfer interactions.
Treatment with a strong Lewis acid removes the methyl groups to yield hexahydroxytriphenylene, a precursor for hydrogen-bonded frameworks held together by strong π–π interactions.
- Organic cathode material in battery research, exploiting its reversible redox behaviour.
- Disc-shaped core for liquid crystal studies.
- Precursor to hexahydroxytriphenylene via Lewis acid demethylation.
- Building block for porous organic frameworks, COFs and hydrogen-bonded frameworks.
- Model planar molecule for scanning tunneling microscopy studies of charge-transfer interactions.
