2,5-Dihydro-3,6-di-2-thienyl-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (CAS 850583-75-4) is a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) compound carrying 2-thienyl substituents at the 3 and 6 positions. DPP units rank among the most widely used organic building blocks for making oligomers and polymers with semiconducting behaviour, targeted at OFETs, OLEDs and organic photovoltaics. It is supplied as a dark red/brown powder or crystals with a purity of >95% by 1H NMR.
The two amine sites can be alkylated to improve the solubility and film morphology of the final molecules, while bromination of the thienyl rings gives brominated DPP intermediates suited to C-C coupling reactions for modifying the DPP core.
Because the DPP core is electron deficient, DPP materials show a relatively high oxidation potential, which can give high-energy charge separated states with fullerene or non-fullerene acceptors and high open voltages in solar cells. Their absorption can reach into the near infrared, and the planar fused core promotes intermolecular π-π interactions that support strong charge mobility; OTFTs based on high molecular weight DPP-DTT have reached mobilities up to 10.5 cm2 V−1 s−1 with on/off ratios ≥10^6.
- Synthesis of DPP-based oligomers and polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Preparation of semiconducting materials for OLEDs.
- Development of donor materials for organic photovoltaics paired with fullerene or non-fullerene acceptors.
- Production of brominated DPP intermediates for C-C bond forming reactions.
- Research into near infrared absorbing materials for photodetectors and photothermal therapy.
