2,6-dibromo-4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b']dithiophene (CAS 365547-21-3) is a bromide-capped dithiophene building block supplied at >98% purity as a yellow oil. It serves as a monomer for PCPDTBT and related organic semiconducting polymers used in OFETs and solar cells.
Because its two thiophene rings are locked into a single plane, the cyclopentadithiophene unit extends conjugation when incorporated into a polymer chain, which lowers the band gap of the resulting material. This flat geometry also influences thin film morphology, helping polymer backbones pack closely together. In PCPDTBT, the planar structure raises device hole mobility to 1 x 10-3 cm2/Vs.
The compound can be prepared by brominating 4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b']dithiophene with N-Bromosuccinimide in dimethylformamide. It has been characterised by 1H NMR in CDCl3.
- Monomer for synthesising the low band gap polymer PCPDTBT.
- Building block for cyclopentadithiophene-based conjugated polymers and oligomers.
- Preparation of semiconducting materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Development of polymer materials for organic solar cells.
