2,7-Dibromonaphthalene (2,7-DBN, CAS 58556-75-5) is a naphthalene building block carrying bromine atoms at the 2 and 7 positions, giving a molecule that is symmetrical about its central carbons. The two bromide caps make it well suited to coupling reactions, so it is widely used as an intermediate when building semiconducting small molecules and polymers for OLEDs, OFETs and organic photovoltaics.
Published work shows what it can lead to. The semiconductor 2,7-di(anthracen-2-yl)naphthalene, made from this core, reaches a hole-transport mobility of 3.3 cm2 V-1 s-1, a photoresponsivity of 8000 A W-1 and a detectivity up to 1.2 × 10^14 Jones, and has been used in optical memory transistors with a strong memory effect. Conjugated microporous polymer aerogels derived from 2,7-DBN have been formed into nanotube air filters that capture particulate matter and take up to 172.73 wt% gaseous iodine.
Ossila supplies the material at >98% purity (1H NMR) as a white to off-white powder or crystals, in 10 g, 25 g and 50 g packs.
