2,9-Bis[p-(formyl)phenyl]-1,10-phenanthroline (BFPP, CAS 120085-99-6) is a V-shaped ligand linker used to construct covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Its 1,10-phenanthroline core carries two 4-formylphenyl arms at the 2- and 9-positions, so the molecule offers both aldehyde groups and nitrogen donor sites. Ossila supplies it at >98% purity as a yellow to pale orange powder or crystals.
The aldehyde groups take part readily in polycondensation reactions, giving imine or amide linkages, while the phenanthroline nitrogens can bind metals to create cross-linked COF/MOF networks. In published work, a cobalt-coordinated one-dimensional pyrene-based COF made from this linker and a pyrene tetraaniline reached a CO evolution yield of 1003 μmol g −1 over 8 hours during visible-light CO2 photoreduction.
The linker has also been built into a copper phthalocyanine COF decorated with silver nanoparticles for electrochemical sensing of species released by living cancer cells, with a sensitivity of 29.1 μA μM −1 cm −2 and a detection limit of 12.6 nM. A phthalocyanine and phenanthroline COF grown on a Cu-MOF enabled dual-mode photoelectrochemical and electrochemical biosensing of Cr 3+ ions in water.
- Synthesis of imine- or amide-linked covalent organic frameworks by polycondensation.
- Construction of metal-coordinated COF and MOF networks through the phenanthroline nitrogen sites.
- Preparation of photocatalytic COFs for visible-light CO2 reduction to carbon monoxide.
- Fabrication of COF-based electrochemical sensors for detecting molecules released from cancer cells.
- Development of photoelectrochemical–electrochemical dual-mode biosensors for Cr 3+ ions in aqueous media.
