2-Amino-4-fluorophenol (CAS 399-97-3), also known as 5-fluoro-2-hydroxyaniline, is a fluorinated aniline/phenol building block supplied as a brown powder with >97% purity. It carries a primary amine at the 2-position and a fluorine atom at the 4-position, giving chemists several functional groups to work with in drug discovery, fluorescent dye development and general organic synthesis.
Because the amine and hydroxyl groups sit ortho to each other, the molecule is well suited to ring-forming reactions that give benzoxazoles and benzoxazines. Condensation with 1,2-diketones yields a fluorescent benzoxazine derivative, while reaction with 1,1'-dibromoethene derivatives provides functionalized benzoxazoles.
The same pair of amine and hydroxy groups can bind a metal centre, forming five-membered chelate rings. A heteroleptic tin(IV) complex built from this ligand has demonstrated in vitro cytotoxicity against human cancer cells.
- Precursor for synthesizing benzoxazole derivatives, including functionalized benzoxazoles from 1,1'-dibromoethene derivatives.
- Starting material for fluorescent benzoxazine derivatives prepared with 1,2-diketones.
- Fluorinated building block for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) research and drug discovery.
- Intermediate in the development of fluorescent dyes.
- Chelating ligand for preparing metal complexes, such as cytotoxic tin(IV) complexes.
