2-Bromo-5-decylthiophene (CAS 514188-72-8) is a thiophene derivative carrying a bromine atom at the 2-position and a decyl chain at the 5-position. Supplied as a yellow liquid with >98% purity, it is widely chosen as an end-capping reagent when building semiconducting oligomers and polymers for organic electronics.
The bromine handle allows straightforward further functionalisation through Pd-catalysed cross-coupling or nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Meanwhile, the decyl chain raises the solubility of the final molecule and adjusts its HOMO and LUMO energy levels, while also contributing thermal stability in OFET and OPV materials.
Used as an end-capping precursor for thiophene and thiophene-phenylene oligomers, this building block has yielded materials with charge mobilities as high as 0.4 cm2/Vs. Its long, flexible alkyl chain also makes it a good fit for semiconducting liquid crystals and for donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) dye sensitisers.
- End-capping of semiconducting oligomers and polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Synthesis of materials for organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and OLEDs.
- Preparation of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) dye sensitisers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
- Building thiophene/thiophene-phenylene oligomers with charge mobilities up to 0.4 cm2/Vs.
- Preparation of semiconducting liquid crystal materials.
