2-Bromonaphthalene (2-BN, CAS 580-13-2) from Ossila is a naphthalene ring carrying a single bromine atom at the 2-position. Supplied at >98% purity (1H NMR) as white to orange powder or crystals, it serves two main roles in organic electronics research: as a solid additive in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells and as a building block for semiconducting molecules and oligomers.
In BHJ active layers it is typically used as a replacement for 1-chloronaphthalene (1CN), improving how well the blend components mix. Added in small proportions, it alters the morphology of solution-processed films, which strongly affects device efficiency. In PTB7:PC71BM cells, a 5 vol% addition of this high-boiling-point additive gave a power conversion efficiency of 7.01%, with V OC of 0.731 V, J SC of 13.79 mA cm -2 and a fill factor of 69.46%.
The bromide group makes the compound a convenient handle for coupling reactions. As one example, 2,6-bis(6-hexyloxy-naphthalen-2-yl)anthracene, prepared from 2-bromonaphthalene, reached a mobility of 0.64 cm 2 V -1 s -1.
