2-Decylthiophene (CAS 24769-39-9) is an alkylated thiophene supplied with a purity above 98% (1H NMR). It serves as a building block for preparing semiconducting small molecules, oligomers and polymers used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and polymer solar cells. The molecule consists of a thiophene ring carrying a decyl chain (C10H21) at the 2-position.
The alkyl chain improves the solubility of the target molecules and can also be used to tune the morphology of the resulting films. The compound is a light yellow to orange liquid with a molecular weight of 224.41 g/mol and a relative density of 0.91.
As an example from the literature, a piceno[4,3-b:9,10-b′]dithiophene with two decyl end groups (C10-PiDT) gave transistors with typical p-type behaviour under ambient conditions in the dark, reaching a hole mobility of 1.21 cm2 V-1 s-1 under optimised FET parameters.
- Synthesis of semiconducting small molecules, oligomers and polymers for organic field-effect transistors.
- Preparation of donor materials for polymer solar cells and organic photovoltaics.
- Building block for OLED material synthesis.
- Introducing decyl side chains to increase solubility and tune thin-film morphology.
- Synthesis of intermediates for low band gap polymers.
