2-Ethylhexyl 4,6-dibromo-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate (CAS 1237479-38-7) is a fused thiophene monomer used to build low band gap conjugated polymers. It is a key building block for well-known donor polymers including PTB-7 and PCE10, the latter also known as PTB7-Th or PBDTTT-EFT.
Both ends of the thienothiophene core carry bromine atoms, making the compound well suited to straightforward cross-coupling polymerisation. Ossila has used this monomer in its own laboratory to prepare PCE10 and PTB-7.
The material is supplied at >98% purity (by NMR) as an off-white to pale orange solid in powder or crystal form, with a melting point of 37 °C - 41 °C. Polymers made from it are applied in organic field-effect transistors, light-emitting devices and organic photovoltaics.
- Synthesis of the low band gap donor polymer PTB-7.
- Synthesis of PCE10 (PTB7-Th, PBDTTT-EFT) for polymer solar cells.
- Preparation of semiconducting polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Development of polymer materials for OLED and PLED devices.
- Research into organic photovoltaic (OPV) active layers.
