2-Fluoro-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (CAS 103438-88-6), also known as 2-fluoro-m-anisaldehyde, is a fluorinated benzaldehyde building block carrying a fluorine atom at the 2-position and a methoxy group at the 3-position. Supplied as white crystals with a purity of >98%, it serves medicinal chemistry, biochemistry and drug discovery laboratories.
Its main role is as a starting material for active pharmaceutical ingredients, notably benzosuberone derivatives. In that route, the aldehyde undergoes a Wittig reaction with (3-carboxypropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide, after which Friedel-Crafts acylation with Eaton's reagent (phosphorus pentoxide in methanesulfonic acid) closes the cycloheptanone ring.
The combination of several functional groups on one ring also makes the compound useful for building bicyclic heterocycles such as hydroisoquinolines, acridinones and quinazolines.
- Precursor for active pharmaceutical ingredients in drug discovery programmes.
- Construction of benzosuberone cores via Wittig reaction followed by Friedel-Crafts acylation.
- Synthesis of bicyclic heterocycles including hydroisoquinolines, acridinones and quinazolines.
- Fluorinated building block for medicinal chemistry and biochemistry research.
