2-(Trifluoromethyl)thioxanthen-9-one (CAS 1693-28-3) is a fluorinated heterocyclic building block from Ossila. Structurally it is a thioxanthone carrying a trifluoromethyl group, making it the sulfur counterpart of xanthone. It serves as an intermediate for preparing photosensitizers used in photoredox catalysis and in OLED materials.
The ketone group readily undergoes nucleophilic attack, which opens a route to further functionalization. Reaction with organolithium reagents has been used to build axially chiral thioxanthenes that show circularly polarized luminescence with a dissymmetry factor of 3.0×10−3, reaching a maximum external quantum efficiency of 20.0% in circularly polarized OLEDs. The sulfide can also be oxidized to a sulfone using reagents such as hydrogen peroxide or meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, allowing the energy band gap to be adjusted.
The compound is also of interest as a triplet photosensitizer in its own right, for photoredox reactions including cycloadditions and nickel-catalyzed aryl esterification. It is supplied as a white powder with a purity of >98%.
