2FIC (CAS 2083617-82-5) is a strongly electron-withdrawing difluorinated malononitrile end-group intermediate from the indanone family. Chemists use it as a building block for non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) such as ITIC-2F, IHIC-2F, IEIC-2F and IXIC-2F, which are applied in high-efficiency organic photovoltaic devices.
Its two fluorine substituents strengthen intramolecular charge transfer between the acceptor core and the 2FIC end groups, which pushes the absorption of the resulting NFAs further into the near infrared (NIR). Fluorination also encourages noncovalent F···S and F···H contacts between molecules, and these interactions can raise the electron mobility of the finished acceptor.
The material is supplied as a pale yellow solid with a purity above 98% as determined by NMR, with chemical formula C12H4F2N2O and a molecular weight of 230.17 g/mol.
