2FT-2Sn, or (3,4-difluorothiophene-2,5-diyl)bis(trimethylstannane), is a fluorinated thiophene building block carrying two trimethylstannane groups. It is used to prepare small molecules, oligomers and polymer semiconductors through C-C coupling, in particular Stille coupling, for organic field-effect transistors, organic solar cells and OLEDs. The material is supplied as a white powder or crystals with a purity of >98% (HNMR).
In published polymer solar cell work, copolymers of fluorinated thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) and terthiophene paired with PC61BM reached power conversion efficiencies up to 9.68%. Adding more fluorine to the central thiophene improved lamellar and π–π stacking crystallinity, gave a nearly coplanar terthiophene backbone, lowered the HOMO level and improved donor compatibility with PC61BM, raising both V OC and J SC.
Difluoroterthiophene units have also been built into the hole-transporting interlayer polymer T2fQ. Blue TADF-OLEDs using this interlayer showed a below-bandgap turn-on voltage of 2.5 V and an EQE of 41.2%, still holding 34.8% at 1000 cd m –2.
- Stille coupling synthesis of fluorinated thiophene-based polymer semiconductors.
- Preparation of donor copolymers such as TPD-terthiophene polymers for fullerene-based organic solar cells.
- Synthesis of hole-transporting interlayer polymers for blue TADF-OLEDs.
- Building semiconducting oligomers and small molecules for OFETs.
